Do you recognize this cylinder head?

Post by SpiderJim »

This maybe the wrong section but I got this spare head with my second 81 Fi Spider. Was supposed to be off a 2000 Fi but looks different. Is it an 1800 that can be used to increase compression? The manifold is a 4 x 2 so I think is a later model? Appreciate any of you experts to let me know. Thx Jim

That head is from a 79 or 80 carb model.

Its hard to tell just from the pictures, as various parts have been interchanged. The exhaust cam wheel is from a FI, and the coolant temp sensor is FI. The cam covers and intake cam wheel are non FI. Early cars had 4-2-1 exhaust manifolds like that. FI exhaust manifolds have a 6 bolt flange and an O2 sensor hole.

Only way to know for sure it to check the casting numbers on the head. Should be around #3 plug. http://www.mirafiori.com/faq/content/headid/headid.html

I just got finished doing some exhaust work on my '79 and can tell you with near certainty that the cylinder head is from a carbed '79 or '80 model. It has the EGR port running off the exhaust manifold to the block which identifies it as such. That exhaust manifold is the somewhat rare 49-state 4-2 version for carbed 2-liter Spiders that I just got done installing on my car (mine had the California-spec 4-1).

If you don't particularly need the exhaust manifold for anything, offer it up in the For Sale section. Seems like there's always a buyer for those.

my hazy memory says the '79 had two reed valves in the center of the head and the '80 had only one that went to the air pump.

this one has the correct cam cover for the carburetor linkage as well.
