lunch box air cleaner kit ?? 32 ADFA

Post by mbouse »

I need to know what lunch box air cleaner kit will work on a 32 ADFA carburetor. must have the crankcase breather hose nozzle on the bottom.

this is for a friend who is not mechanically inclined. I'll be working on this project from afar.

also, can someone trace out the foot print of the top of the 32 ADFA carburetor and send it to me, so i can cut/modify an air cleaner kit?

I used
01-00-8809-0 RECTANGULAR AIR CLEANER. WEBER DFV-DFAV-DFEV, 1-3/4" HIGH w/GAUZE

from Dans performance http://www.dansperformanceparts.com/bug ... ntake1.htm
it was about $20.00 shipped. It comes with the crankcase breather hose nozzle.

It took about 5 minutes to trim carb opening. I might have had to dill 1 or 2 new holes I can not remember.

I tried the the 2 1/2" high filter and it made the car sound like a vaccum.

Mike,I recently got a filter for my ADFA from Pierce Manifolds. It is a 'turtleback' and looks great. Was around 35 w/ shipping and does have the fitting for the breather.

Very, very nice people to deal with, fast shipping. What is it you need for the ADFA? I would be happy to send you the top of a old carb if it will help.Email me your address in 'Kow Kountry' and I will get it out tomorrow.

thanks.... it is what i thought. fortunately, this carb still has the original air cleaner AND the original zinc chromate mounting ring. I will get the ring shipped to me... which will tell me the opening size and orientation, and the mounting bolt locations.

with that ring... I will be able to modify a lunch box cleaner.

craig... does that turtle back come with a nozzle for the crankcase breather hose?

I was a little slow on the 'edit' :D It does have the breather fitting. Fit perfectly ,no mods.

I use the same or similar Pierce Manifold oval filters for 40 IDF carbs on a 1.8L engine, in a 1970 spider with a flat hood. Other filters would have been bumping against the hood, so I'm really pleased with how these oval filter boxes have worked out. Mine do have holes for a breather fitting, but not nearly big enough for the crankcase breather hose for the Fiat engines. How big is the breather fitting on yours, Craig?? To be effective it would need to be about 3/4" diamter or larger. Otherwise it may be too restrictive, and could probably result in leaking seals. John Logan solved the issue by cutting a hole through the oval mesh material, and connecting with some common Home Depot variety PVC fittings (http://www.midwest124.com/P6270101.JPG). I took the easy way out and just dump the crankcase breather hose discharge to atmosphere.

alvon... i like that picture. thanks for including it in your reply. i have been worried about leaking seals since installing my rectangular lunch box.... reducing the crankcase breather hose to fit the supplied fitting on the air filter kit.

my lower block has always leaked... so i couldn't tell the difference when i performed the modification. but, getting ready to replace all seals this winter has renewed my desire to make this crankcase fitting fit properly.

when you say discharge to the atmosphere, are you filtering the end of the hose? WHERE does your discharge terminate?

Hey Maytag, you can hear a little sucking at low rpm,but the growl when the secondaries kick in is awesome.I cant keep my foot out of it! You are right,Alvon, re. the breather. That fitting would be too small.I have a filter on the end of my discharge hose and blocked off the fitting on the bottom of the filter. You can see the filter in the pic.

How well do these actually filter? I am looking for something to replace the giant pancake on the twin IDFs on my Coupe (European), but only if they will still keep the junk out. The "turtle back" looks great.

Craig,
would you have been able to turn your filter the other direction like Ace did on his 40's?

Brady,I am not saying that you couldnt do it,but it only fit one way with that carb. The top of the ADFA isnt symetrical. The look was fine with me the way it was.I would think you could re-drill the base and make it turn the other way.I have a parts carb you could experiment on if you need it.

Thanks for the offer Craig, I have mine off. I was just wondering if it was universal. Yours looks very nice. When it's time, I'm going to get one.

I have my breather house going into the lunch box. I think it has caused my crankcase breather area to leak more since I install the luch box. I never noticed the leak before the filter was on. The house is much bigger than the opening in the connection part of the lunch box. I am going to see if I can moify it tonight.
