WON'T GO IN TO GEAR WHEN RUNNING

Post by LE759 »

I have a 81 spider that won't go into gear while the engine is running. The clutch cable is working properly; could it be my throw out bearing. I can put it into gear when the engine isn't running.
Thank you for your help.

has the car been sitting a long time or has it been driven lately? Need more info to give an educated answer, otherwise you're going to get a list of possibilities

I agree with Mark; too many variables and possibilities....
But generally speaking: a throw-out bearing won;t cause the symptoms you're describing.... that's more typically a clutch disc.

Have you tried reverse?
I'm no Boy-Racer..... but if I can't take every on-ramp at TWICE the posted limit.... I'm a total failure!

About once every three months I see a car that has so many floor mats shoved up under the clutch pedal that the clutch won't disengage. I really don't like floor mats. At any rate, your clutch is not disengaging, and there are many possibilities, throw out brg realisticly not one of them. Adjustment, firewall flex, or worn clutch parts more likely. As was asked, has it ran lately?? When did the clutch last work well?? Or has it ever??

Could also be the dreaded bent firewall, not allowing full cable entension

It is most likely the clutch disk is stuck. Put it in 4th gear and while holding the clutch in, have some one rock the car back and forth.

The clutch was working fine until the car sat for about 2 weeks because of a wire shorting in the distributor. That was fixed
last week and then the clutch would not disengage to put into gear while running. The car won't go into any of the gears, reverse included. I adjusted the cable thinking that might of stretched, but that didn't help. The cable seems to be doing its job at the transmission.

Thats my point, the flywheel and clutch have rusted together and are now stuck. This will happen in when the car sit in a humid area for extended period of time.

So I just need to get in there and unstick them then? Have any suggestions how without taking out the transmission?
