Engine was running smoothly. After driving for a couple of hours at 70 mph, I now have a ticking at the same time as the rpm's. Sounds like a valve tapping the cover. Could the vavles have all of a sudden come somewhat loose? Tried a thicker oil w/ a change hoping that would take care of it but no go. Still a tapping in time w/ the rpm's.

Re: engine ticking
What weigh oil did you have and what did you switch to?
You will have to do a little investigation. You can use a 24", 1/4" round wood dowel as a stethascope to listen on the cam cover to pinpoint which one it is. Is it exhaust or intake side?
Two hand screws take off the covers and you can check the suspect tappet spacer with a feeler gauge to see if it is in spec.
Also look at the cam lobe to see if there is any scratches or chips on the lobe. Wonder if you have a broken valve spring or bent valve.
Mark will be able to diagnose this better.

Re: engine ticking
have we done any work on the exhaust lately? check your exhaust manifold nuts.... ticking w/rpm can be an exhaust leak.
Re: engine ticking
need more info to offer advice, but Mike is right about checking the exhaust. A leak at one cylinder can sound like a knock. How does the engine run now? The valves can't contact the cover, they sit under the cam and bucket. A great investment is a cheap stethoscope; you can get them at Harbor Freight for less than $5.
