carb and engine help
My car is together mostly and it refuses to idle sometimes it will start idle at 900 rpm then drop to 100 and slowly die but most of the time it wont start unless i pump on the pedal. I have a 76 with an 32 adfa rebuilt carb the car isnt fully timed because it wont idle. All the smog stuff is gone except the cat and it also does not have a evaporation canister because i didnt have one to begin with and havent bothered to look for one online. I thought it was just a matter of adjusting the carb so i put in the radiator to see if i could get it right and not worry about killing it but that of course didnt work. My first thought is it might need to be rejetted because i took all the smog stuff off. If so i really dont know anything about rejetting a carb all i can do is take it apart and put it back together correctly.

Re: carb and engine help
You shouldn't have to rejet to get it running. ADFA also had a solenoid on the side of it, it must be plugged in to 12 volts for that carb to idle. It looks like a barrel with a spade connector. If it isn't plugged in it isn't going to run.
If that isn't it look for air leaks. The starts, idles, and dies sounds like an air leak. The only place that air should be entering that carburetor is through the top. The brake booster should be the only thing connected to the intake manifold. All other ports should be blocked off.

I have had a similar problem with my ADFA.I have a very smooth idle ,after rebuilding the carb. But when I give it the gas it wont come back to idle.It sticks at 1500+ rpm.If I manually push the throttle arm in,back to a perfect idle.My surging problems were caused by mucho debris in the float bowl...just like Mark Alison said!!

oh.. no. Mark doesn't need to hear that.
is the acellerator cable / linkage moving freely? sticky cables are easy to remedy, and sticky linkages should be greased occasionally.

Mike ,I went out this evening and really lubed and adjusted the linkage and acc. cable. So far(knocing on the desktop),so good.It is coming back to a consistent 1000 rpm idle. The rebuild/cleaning was very easy,I shouldnt have waited so long.Denise drove the car on Sun. and gave it a big thumbs up,so it is getting there.

Re: carb and engine help
Should there be smoke pumping out of my crank case breather hose? I swear this fiat is going to kill me in my sleep i just know it.
Re: carb and engine help
smoke from the breather tube indicates blowby. Gases escaping past the piston rings.....
As for lubing accelerator linkage, you should only use graphite or a dry silicone. Oil, grease or anything wet will work for a short time, then dirt and debris will stick to it and make the problem worse than it originally was
