Two Hoses?

Post by mchalem89 »

I am in the process of getting pictures of two hoses for everyone to look at but in the meantime I will describe it. There are two hoses, one green and one black that are hanging just in front of the rear axle in the back. One deffinately goes to part of the gas tank, potentially a breather and the other I haven't traced to see where it goes. I brought the car to a top Porsche mechanic that I know and he said there is some type of canister or something that goes there. His and my only concern is that this is a fire hazard with fuel vapors possibly being released from these hoses under the car. I appreciate any help or insight!

Thanks!

I have drain hoses from the inside plastic "buckets" where the top metal sits when the top is down. If I remember they hang down in front of the axle.

You should always tell us what year Spider you have and carbed or F.I.

Could those be the hoses that are the battery drain tubes just above were the driveshaft connects to the rear axle?
Chris, thoses side drain tubes feed into the main rail and cant be seen from below

It's an F.I.......I will have to get under there and look but the drain for the battery pan sounds like it is deffinately what the black hose is for but the real question is what is the green one for. It connects to a three way thing that connects to the gas tank. Maybe this will help. I need to get some pictures up.

That 3-way is a vapor/liquid fuel separator. The single hose that connects to that is a hose that comes from the black charcoal trap canister in the engine compartment. It should be on the drivers side, and you will have to follow the bottom line that runs out of the canister back to see where it ends up under neath your car. It should be a metal fuel-like line that that has a 2-way valve (that looks like the 3-way valve on the tank) but has only one outlet on each side, on the very end that the green hose connects to. The hose may have slipped off and you just have to secure it on. On a fuel injected system, it can only help to have it connected again.

By the way, there should be two hoses that come out of the battery overflow tray.

i was just under my 80 the other day... as i recall there are two hoses from the battery drain pan. and they fit through the sheet metal inside oval holes adjacent to each other, parrallel with the axle, symetrical to the center line of the car.

is that green hose a semi-clear hose, or is it solid?

The hose is semi clear. Just hanging down next to the hose that looks like it is a drain for the battery pan.

as i recall, the only semi green see thru hose is a fuel hose, or maybe a fuel vapor hose.

as i recall, the battery drain hoses came in pairs, sitting directly beneath the battery tray, and were solid black rubber.

Do you know where exactly the green one connects? I am having a hard time finding where it goes or if you can take a picture of the spot or have one that would be great too!

exactly where do these hoses exit the trunk? to the right of center, to the left of center, or center? Left=driver's side.

when the exit the trunk, do they do so vertically, or horizontally?

best you take a picture of your hoses and post them. i'll not hazard a guess with out seeing. previous owners have done some weird stuff over the years.

mchalem89,
I can only tell you what and where that hose it, you will have to do the work of connecting it yourself.
