Window regulator

Post by digitech »

Has anyone changed out a manual type window regulator? How difficult is it? I need to do both of mine on the '79 and probably change out the driver's door glass at the same time if it's not a bear. Thanks.

Regulators are always a bear. Id do one at a time, and the replacments show you what they need. The plastic on the door needs to be sealed as it keeps water out of the interrior.

on a scale of one to five with five being expert-only, this one is a two. as dave suggests, do one door at a time, that way you have an example of how to string the cable. there are also diagrams floating around that show the correct cable installation.

the bottom plate DOES adjust, so you can increase/decrease the tension of the cable with these two bolts. loosen them carefully to gain the slack you need.

i also use a spring clamp to hold the window partway up when i change mine. that way, i don't need a third hand just to support the window from slamming down into the door.

Thanks for the tips, Mike - exactly what I was wondering. Is it difficult to remove the door glass? Mine is not too good and I have a replacement if it's not too much of a PITA.
