Wow! Nice Sounding Exhaust - Details

Post by SpiderJim »

Well, I decided to risk having my local Midas muffler shop rip out my old system and custom bend and install a new one. Seeing that my old system was just rattling away and had almost zero noise regarding a sporty sound and sounded more like a LADA it could not be much worse. So this is what I had done.

Cut and remove the old system just before the Cat Conv. Install a custom formed aluminized 2" pipe instead of the 1 3/4". all the way to the new muffler which is a aluminized Dynamax Ultra-Flow welded muffler with lifetime warranty. This is a straight through with glass innards with a single center 2" tail pipe. Had some trepidation when I looked through it and saw no restrictions whatsoever!. So the guy said if it is to loud we just pop a small resonator inline for $50. With new hangers and a nice chrome sloped tip added we fired it up. I was waiting for the machine gun sound and was quite surprised at how beautiful it sounded. It sounded exactly like my old Dino Ferrari from the seventies. I could not be more happy with the tone at all RPM ranges. When at idle a light rumble. Low to middle range a throaty medium tone that lies to the public saying Ferrari power. At higher speed mid to full revs it just goes quiet so lovely for hwy and cruising speeds.

The above tones are through all gear ranges. What I really liked is when down shifting the tone dances all over with a nice deep cackle kind of like a Merlin off a Spitfire or P-51 (but not as loud) regarding performance? Well not had the car long enough beforehand to really measure a difference. But with the nice sounds it does feel faster in the brain at least. Most important is the ladies in the house love it.

Now I'm very fussy about my cars and can only say that I am very pleased with this setup. Total cost in Canadian dollars installed $421.98 with lifetime warranty. So being in Canada at least 50% of the cost is in tarriffs, taxes and general screw the people taxes or am I being to mean? 9 out of 10.
Can be viewed here. I will be painting the muffler box flat black to blend it better. http://gallery.me.com/jamesaellis1#100101

Jim that sounds great :) I think there's a midas in Penticton and will see if they might replicate something what you have. I do want to goto 2" but want to connect up near where the two pipe goes into one.
When it's on a hoist take a few snaps.

Jim, any chance we could get a part number for that muffler?

Every time I look for mufflers there's such variety and I know for sure they're not for Fiat applications. Please help narrow down the search.

Thanks,
Ernie

Okay lads for those interested OR not!!........ Follow the link to my restoration site that I will be updating as things progress. The movie is in Quick time and should work in all browsers. Crank the volume to get closer to the real tone.

Sorry no part number but it is a single tip 2" pipe in and out called a MaxiFlo which is a Midas brand I think. Straight thru flow type with a glass pack innards. You can get two types one at less cost which is crimped seams or the better one which I got which is welded and lifetime warranty for about fifty bucks CDN more. The pipe from the header is 2" aluminized direct to the muffler with nothing in between. They custom bent the pipe from straight 2" stock. I'm very pleased with the results and quite surprised to be honest!

Just ordered myself a set of 15" rotas wheels from Mark http://www.allisonsautomotive.com/who is extremely helpful and easy to deal with to compliment my nice exhaust sound.

By the way, SoCal Mark now offers a custom exhaust system to replace our stock systems as well. http://www.allisonsautomotive.com/CIMG0509.JPG
