Transmission Fluid Change

Post by punes »

I would like some insight on tranny fluid change on a 5 Spd. I have no idea when the previous owner changed the fluid..I have had the car 5 years and 7,000kms (4000 miles).

I have had issues changing tranny fluid on an automatic and then the tranny slipping and needing a rebuild 2 years apart.

Is changing the fluid after sooo many years worse off than not changing it at all.

I would change it, no damage to the tranny can occur unless you don't refill it

A heads up on the trans fluid you use. Apparently this manual trans need a special fluid that is easy on the syncros, they sell the stuff on IAP and Vick Autosports. I learned after the old stuff ate several syncros. The syncros are made of brass and they are a soft medal. Anyway, it is an unusually cheap preventative.

unless you are a fan of paying the ups man to deliver quarts of oil to your door, why not stop into your local NAPA dealer and buy a full gallon of GL-1 90w gear oil for $3.50 less than you can buy one quart at a catalogue supplier.

$7.99 per gallon at NAPA, no freight expense
$11.50 per quart ($46.00/gallon) at the catalogue, plus freight.

that's right, sports fans. a quart of GL-1 90w in the brand spanking new catalogue with the red Alfa on the cover is selling for $11.50 per quart plus tax and shipping.

remembering that you'll need more than one quart for a complete fill.
