New '74 CA/MD owner in WI

Post by slickdizzy »

Hello all, my name's Desmond. I'm a (apparently insane) 19-year-old gearhead from Milwaukee, picking up a '74 Sport Spider with the rare CA/MD bumpers in a few hours. This will be my 39th car since age 16, joining a '73 Triumph TR6, an '83 VW Jetta GLI and a handful of motorcycles in my garage. The car is costing me $300, and is in pretty good shape (will have pics, questions, and more info when I get it home).

Anyways, about the car - it's a '74 with an 1800. Currently maroon in color, the front end has had some slight rust repair done, and there's a little bondo hiding in the quarters, but I've researched pretty thoroughly and this car is solid where it counts - great rocker panels and sills, solid suspension mounting points, etc. It's been parked in a barn and started every other week since 1991, and a few months ago the owner died and left the car to his daughter, who has no idea what to do with it. A few curiosities - the smog pump seems to have been bypassed with a shorter timing belt (where the hell will I find a replacement), it has the 4-2-1 exhaust if I remember right, the interior is virtually immaculate, and of course it has the hideous '74-only CA/MD bumpers, which will be sold and replaced with Abarth blocks or something similar.

My plan for it is to paint it like an Abarth and use it as my BA/BE Rally car next year. If you're not familiar, the BA/BE Rally is a 5-day scavenger hunt rally run from New York to New Orleans every year. The catch is that you have to buy the car for $500 or less. I've completed it 3 times previously, in a Renault Encore, a Volkswagen Cabriolet, and a Volvo 960 - I've been the only one to bring a French car thus far, and nobody's had the stones to bring anything Italian, so I'm going to meet a new challenge this time. :D

I'm done yappin' now, but it's good to be here! Seems like a great resource.

Welcome Desmond.

You will find several fellow Fiat nuts in the WI area. Post some pics and tell us more about your cross country adventures. Keep the adventures going. As you may know, add a marriage certificate, a couple of kids, mix it in a bowl and the risky adventure stuff seems to take a sideline, so enjoy and take us along by posting about your adventures.
