Ok
Here is Australia it's called a Moreton Bay Fig Tree ( Moreton Bay being the bay that leads into the Brisbane River - and Brisbane being the capital city of the State of Queensland )

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ficus_macrophylla

In biology classes we were taught that the root systems can extend for kilometers !

I'm from Brisbane originally, so I should know these things.

Yeh, I've heard of her, and understand that she has a home in Montecito, near Santa Barbara. But, I was just guessing about that being her gate. There's thousands of wealthy estates up in that area. Is that hers?

See that big fountain in the background thats spouting water about 50 feet in the air. Well.... Oprah was building a big house/mansion/estate on Maui a few years ago at the end of a long road. And of course it would not be complete without several fountains. The problem was the water main burried along the road leading to the estate was an 8 inch pipe. To supply the fountains she would need a 10 inch pipe to be installed. I'm not sure how long of a stretch needed to be upgraded but I can assume it was several miles, maybe as much as 10. What Oprah wants Oprah gets, and when you got more money than god anything is possible.

She went door to door along the stretch that needed to be upgraded and asked the home owners if they would allow the upgrade if she would foot the bill. As with any development on the islands, people especially locals are strongly opposed. They want to keep the islands islands. "We don't want another Oahu/Honolulu" So everyone turned her down, no pipe upgrade, and no fountains. Sorry Oprah.

Not to pick on your tale, Matt, but I don't follow why she'd need a huge a$$ water main for a fountain. A fountain should be using its own recirculating pumping system. It would be really foolish to just blow the city water supply into the air and down the drain. What am I missing here?

My good friend who lives in Chicago, works for her on the show as a video production editor. Every two years Oprah flies her entire staff plus significant others out to Maui to stay at her house for a week. A few months after I moved out to Oahu from Chicago, my friend and his wife came out to visit us on Oahu for a few days before going on to Maui to stay at her house. That was the story as it was told to me.

"I don't follow why she'd need a huge a$$" I don't follow either, but she's got one! haha

Since grew up in Santa Barbara, I disqualified myself from your contest. The Morton Bay Fig tree has quite a history. back in the Sixties it served as a popular Hippie gathering point and Hitckhiking pick up and spot. Until about the early 1990's Santa Barbara had the only 4 remaining stop lights on the 101 freeway ! The tree is where the first stoplight into town from the North ( Goleta and UCSB). Over the years it was a Homeless encampment as well. That whole area was know as "Wino Country Safari" to those of us working in that area.

That said, it is a VERY impressive tree!

Lots of nice little mansions in the Montecito area as well. Lots of the Hollywood and Music industry types have homes there. Oprah, Steve Martin, Kenny Loggins, Michael Mc Donald, Jackson Brown, and of course the late King of Pop's neverland ranch is just over the hill as is Bo Derrick's ranch .

Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

Here is another Santa Barbara area Trivia question: What Iconic symbol of the "Establishement" was burned to the ground in 1969 in Isla Vista as an anti war protest? Isla Vista is connected to the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB)
