1800 cc in a 69 Coupe

Post by WarbirdAL »

SInce I have my 1438 torn apart, I have an 1800 cc that runs awesome, was thinking would there be a problem fitting it into the 69 coupe compartment, someone told me the distributor would be in the way since the hood slopes downward more than the spider does... also would it mate up to the 4 speed original tranny?

just thinking,, probably be better to keep everything original and get the 1438 rebuilt and put back in.

The A series coupes are becoming really rare, as is the 1438. I would keep it together with the 1438 and the 4 speed.

Hi WarBird

If you want to use the 1800 use the 1438 flywheel the bolts are a smaller size you'll need to drill
them out to the 1800 flywheel bolt size .

thanks, thats what i was thinking. I am planning on pulling the engine out then and having it rebuilt, since it had been sitting so long. I new head I got from Mark, so I may as well have the lower end rebuilt.

The guy I bought my '72 Spider from had a coupe, i think it was a '69. It's a shame that he let it sit outside for a quarter century, I would have bought it, but it's got bad rust. I looked at it again for parts a few weeks ago, but there are sooo many mice in that thing! It drove to where it sits, but that was many moons ago.

I misread your post Al. I thought you said "I will have to stay at my cousins a little longer." Funnier that way though.

I installed a stock bone 1800cc out of a euro 124 coupe (has 118 hp). With the combination of bottom end torque, a five speed and the 10/41 diff ratio I must say driving the car is a pleasure! Plus with the with the torque tube the car rocks.

Al you could easily mount your stock block mounted distributer, like I did. Also your 1438 fly wheel will bolt right up the 1800 crank.

One thing you will encounter is the engine/rad clearance.

What I did was mounted the 1800 rad with electric fan, but made brackets on each side of the rad to lowered it. Had to because the water pump pulley would touch the electric fan bracket.

As you see in the pictures I DID NOT hack up the rad support.

Next step is alquati cams, 40 IDFs ( on swept back alquati manifold) higher compression pistons and headers

A shame really the yellow car doesn't look to be well thought out, well prepared or well executed.

Jeezz louise! You have one very nice car. Great work. Are there more pictures you could put up in another thread?

I would also recommend using the original distributor with a blank off in the cam bank or put in an earlier cam box which I believe does fit.

ital, nice car well done. On the 1800 you moved the dist from the cam back to the block area, a pretty straight shot?

Beautiful car! I hope you think about ceramic coating that header to match the rest of that clean engine bay. With the block mounted distributor, aren't you going to have a clearance issue if you go with the 40 IDFs?

Yes Al, just a straight shot using a block mounted distributer from a 1438cc coupe, spider, sedan. You can also use the electronic dizzy from a 1979 lancia beta coupe

The 1608,1592, 1756 or 1995 US model twin cam engines even though these had an exhaust cam driven dizzy there was also the gear in the block for a dizzy as well!

thanks for the compliments, picture soon of the car.

Oh, if any of you are in need of OEM parts for any series coupes, check out my ebay store or post me a PM

I have OEM new trim, complete tail lights, turn signal housings and /or lenses front and rear. Many more parts not listed on hand. Link below

mdrburchette, once I go to duel idfs I will or use a swept back alquati manifold (like I did with my 1608cc 124 coupe) or move the dizzy to the cam box and use the original Fiat “waffel” manifold, but then lower the engine because I am sure # carb will be really close to the hood.
