Emission system on 75 Spider

Post by DFuzz »

I have a 1975 Spider and I am wondering what can be done to remove all the emission stuff from the engine. The carb looks like an octopus with all those hoses running off it. I would like to tidy up that area of the engine bay but getting rid of that cannister and such.

youi can remove all of the emission equipment, but it won't make a huge difference in performance. The only vacuum hose you really need is for the power brake booster. The evaporative system is harmless, and does help curb emissions without any effect at all on driveability or performance. The catalyst and egr systems are the biggest detriment to performance

I'm sure there's a new law comming soon that will require random emissions checks, at least in CA! Actually the local P.D. here has been cracking down on the Ricers, they're popping hoods and sending them to the smog referee. They actually tested roadside emissions testers here that took a picture of the offenders plate on gross polluters. It was on a rural road and the rumor is it met it's end with a little help from a deer rifle.

the charcoal canister won't help one iota in performance enhancement. you might even get an offending odor or two from the engine bay after removing it.

if you do remove it, i'd hand onto it in case you change your mind.

In the part of Canada where I live, my Fiat is classified as an antique, so the emission stuff isn't a huge deal. I am not so much concerned about better performance by taking the stuff out, I just don't like the look of all those hoses running every which way. Maybe I will try to change the routing and make it look tidier that way. If I do remove it, what do I doo with all the outlets on the carb? Do they need to be capped or can they just be left open? As far as the charcoal cannister, I was under the impression that active charcoal has an effective life and is effected by humidity in the air, etc. After 30+ years, is the charcoal even absorbing anything any longer? I know the active charcoal filters we use at work only last 30 days.

So what does someone use to cap vacuum ports, e.g. the one associated with the EGR?

This is an old thread brought back up, but it's very timely for me too. I just posted this on Mira myself. My orange car has the intake manifold and carb off, so there are all kinds of hoses that lead to nowhere right now. I noticed the charcoal canister was not mounted to the car anymore, it was just laying loose in the engine bay. Was wondering if I could just remove it, or should I remount it? The one on my red car is mounted, but the hoses are completely split in half. If I ever do register either of the cars, they'd be antiques and exempt from state inspection, so emissions inspection isn't a concern.

My understanding is that you want the charcoal canister installed with some kind of line(s) between it an the fuel tank to keep fumes down.
