judging by the cajun mike call sign i am guessing you are talking Louisiana not los angeles right? if so you may not need to worry about the emissions stuff that is gone. even here in atlanta, where the EPA sanction says we have to care, cars are exempted from emissions tests and inspections after 25 years. check with your dmv to see if it is required on a 1979 vehicle. my guess is it is not.

This gives you the short and skinny - being a former CA resident the trials and tribulations of CA vintage car ownership is not terribly friendly to our 4 wheel compatriots from the 70s+, - these will be known as the forgotten cars in time to come. I certainly hope you can manage a clean bill of health for your '79.....L.

Hi from LA also,
Just went through all the hassels of getting my Fiat smogged. Believe me you need everything to get it to pass. The Air injection pump, hoses, bipass value and manifold is probally the most signifiant parts to getting it to pass the tests. With out the air pump putting air into the exaust manifole and helping the gasses to continue to burn the catalitic converter will not work properly, and you will fail the test. Last but not least there is a visual inspection that goes along with the physical, if its not there even if it works or not, they will fail it.
If you got questions just ask... the forum, everyone here is great in helping out.
