Hello from South Carolina, New Kid On The Block

Post by silent_runner »

Hello Everyone,

I'd first like to say hello to everyone from the very hot and humid State of South Carolina. You can understand why I need a convertible!

Until recently I didn't have a clue about the Spider. I saw one and talked to the owner briefly. My interest is peaked.

I have a ton of questions but I'll keep it brief and let the conversation develop.

1) Is there any model year in particular that I should avoid or focus on?
2) How does the car ride/handle?
3) Any special nuances about the car? Is it hard to start in the winter, etc?.
4) What should I look for when I'm examining a potential purchase?
5) Can you give me a "fair price" estimate/ballpark range?
6) Is there a club in SC that I could contact?

Just so you know, I'm not a mechanic/restorer so I'd be looking for a sound vehicle.

I'll close for now. Any feedback from you will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for you time.

what year are you looking at
check rust in the floor pans,
1967-1980 carb latter years smogged,
1981 - 1985 fuel injected some turboed
check trans first to second and third shift
you can get more power with the carb versions
but less maintance on the fuelies and they tend not to be tempermental on cold days

Winter is a relative term. Try winter in Michigan if you don't understand the meaning of that phrase.

Some 1980's were FI, the rest carb'd.

Are you a smog test state? If not, easily gained performance on the 1975+ vehicles by working on those emmissions controls.

1983+ are Pininfarina and not Fiat, if that makes a difference to you.

My 1980 today functions, performs and rides about the same as a brand new Miata.

Inital cost will vary widely depending on the condition of the vehicle, the seller, and the buyer. Beware, there are many EBay scammers out there. It is definitely worth the trip to actually see and touch the vehicle.

there are superb aftermarket vendors and parts available, as well as most parts can be obtained used by surfing the forums.
