More oil stuff and zinc additive
More oil stuff and zinc additive
I'm now a dealer for Cam Shield, a zinc additive, and have it in stock. Here is a link from their website explaining why Rotella is not the best choice for our Fiat motors;

Re: More oil stuff and zinc additive
All the oil threads and recommendations I read has my head spinning!
That article on why not to use diesel oils mentions a couple of reasons other than the zddp issue, so I guess Rotella and other deisel oils are out, even with added zddp.
Cam Shield looks like the answer to zddp, but it forces the next obvious question: what type/brand/weight of oil do we add it to?

Re: More oil stuff and zinc additive
probably the best choice is to add it to a SM rated oil, which is formulated for newer cars and improves fuel mileage. That's the oil that is easiest to find in any store

Wow, talk about getting to have your cake and eat it,too. After all the oil discussions this sounds like a "best of both worlds" solution. Modern oil for our Fiats with the extra zinc they need.

If you guys come up with a winning combination. Please let me know.

Re: More oil stuff and zinc additive
Mark, what sizes does the cam-shield come in,and how expensive a product is it? How much do you add to a typical oil change? I will be changing my oil soon, and will probably go with the trusted(by me) Castrol GTX w/ the additive.
Thanks,Craig

Re: More oil stuff and zinc additive
it comes in various sizes, and it is slightly cheaper to buy the family size. But I'll be stocking the One-Shot which will treat 5 qts of oil. It has 8800ppm of zinc. So if you divide it by 5 it comes to the recommended level of zinc. The One Shot should sell for just under $8
They shipped my order today, so I should have it within a few days

Re: More oil stuff and zinc additive
Thanks for the tip, Mark! To clarify, I believe the concentrated Cam Shield product has about 88,000 ppm of zinc (see http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthr ... 20&page=16 read post#232). Per the Cam Shield recommendation for 1/4 oz treatment per 1 qt (32 oz), you would get 88,000 / 32 / 4 = 687 ppm additional zinc, which is pretty much in line with their claim that it adds about 800 ppm to bring the total zinc up to about 1600 ppm for normal usage in a flat cam engine (assuming most oils out there have about 800 ppm zinc). So Cal Mark wrote:it comes in various sizes, and it is slightly cheaper to buy the family size. Following is some info from the Team Camaro site which answers some concerns that folks had about the Cam Shield product. I will be getting some Cam Shield for from you for my upcoming oil change, Mark, and will probably prefer to buy in the larger 4 oz or 8 oz package in the future, since I drive my spider a lot and change the oil frequently.
Good Morning,
We were looking at the Team Camaro forum and reading the discussion about Cam-shieldâ„¢. There appears to be much interest in the subject, some correct information, but also some incorrect information or assumptions about Cam-shieldâ„¢. We will be happy to respond to any questions that the forum may have about engine oil and Cam-shieldâ„¢.
Cam-shieldâ„¢does not thicken engine oil or alter its viscosity characteristics or react with oil to create impurities or turn it to jelly. Cam-shieldâ„¢ is not a viscosity modifier (such as Lucas Stabilizer) and does not contain any component that modifies engine oil viscosity at any temperature.
Cam-shieldâ„¢ is a premium proprietary blend of primary and secondary ZDDP in a high quality group IIIcarrier base oil. Viscosity characteristics are approximately the same as a SAE 30 engine oil.
When using the Cam-shieldâ„¢ Measuring bottles, we suggest measuring at room temperature for the most accurate measurements. Cam-shieldâ„¢ can bemeasured at sub-freezing temperatures and you can still get accurate measurements, it just takes a few seconds longer.
Note that the ZDDPlus product is actually more viscous than Cam-shieldâ„¢,uses a low quality Group 1 type base oil as a carrier, is less concentrated, does not indicate the species of ZDDP (primary or secondary), and is less cost efficient than Cam-shieldâ„¢.
STP is a different type of product, it is an engine oil treatment that is based on dispersency/detergency/anti-oxidancy with a very trivial treat of ZDDP. STP is viscous and does becomemore viscous at cold temperatures. We are not aware of any miscibility issues with STP at any temperatures.
Cam-shieldâ„¢ is highly concentrated, at least 30% more than ZDDPlus, so that only a small amount is needed for treating your favorite oil (this is the method used by engine oil formulators at the major oil companies when formulatingengine oil). It is critical not to dilute the oil as this will impact its performance integrity.
A bottle of ZDDPlus treats only 5 quarts of oil. (retail -$9.99)
Cam-shieldâ„¢ 1-SHOT treats 6 quarts of oil for normal operation (retail -$7.50)
Cam-shieldâ„¢ 1-SHOT Break-in/Racing treats 6 quarts of oil for break-in or racing. (retail - $9.95)
The Cam-shield™ Measuring bottles (4 oz- (retail- $14.95, treats 8 to 16qts of oil), 8 oz- (retail - $23.95, treats 16 to 32 quarts of oil) and the Professional 64 oz Bottle treats 128 to 256 quarts of oil - $150.00). Treat as follows: ¼ ounce of Cam-shield™ per quart for normal operation, ½ounce per quart for break-in or racing– no other product does that.
Cam-shieldâ„¢ is instantly fully miscible with all engine oils at all temperatures. Cam-shieldâ„¢ does not drop out of solution with engine oil at any temperature !
The pedigree of Cam-shieldâ„¢ componentry is track (NASCAR, NHRA, Indy, F1, LeMan, APBA) and street tested -Cam-shieldâ„¢ contains the sameengine oilZDDP anti-wear componentry that currently is (at lower levels), and has been, in major brand engine oils for over 60 years.
For anyone who has any additional concerns, you may wish to make contact with our closest large scale engine re-builder in a cold climate who rebuilds very large quantities of engines for many different applications (muscle cars, race cars, restorations, industrial, agricultural), The Block Shop in Edmonton, Alberta, (http://www.tbsengines.com).
*Note that they build many very rare and expensive engines and use only Cam-shieldâ„¢; they have discontinued using all other anti-wear treatments for their engines.
Hope this helps, we are happy to answer any questions.
Thanks!

Re: More oil stuff and zinc additive
Not to dredge up an old topic, but I think I read on the Cam Shield site that it is not for use in cars with catalytic converters. So for those of us who have converters, what is recommended, if anything?

I too was getting ready for an oil change and was considering Castro Syntec full synthetic. Is there a problem with synthetic oil? Should we add this cam shield to synthetic?
