Speedo question (1979 Spider 2000)

Post by FinnSpider »

I dismantled the dash and I've got all gauges on the table. Otherwise everything looks good (except unbelievably dusty), but there is a cable at the back of the speedo which is going nowhere

If anybody has a MPH speedo in his/her hand could you be so kind to take a photo for me. Where is the yellow/red cable supposed to go?

This is interesting. I have more wires ! Well, actually I don't, but my speedo does.

You see, there is a place between the speedometer rotating cable stud (is this correct?) in the middle and the 3 wires at the edge of the speedo, where 2 additional wires come from. The other is black and the other is red-yellow.

I will try to take a photo. I suppose this must be one of those "gotta see to believe" -things !

Do you have a wiring diagram? I'd check that first.

Hes talking about the red and yellow striped wire that comes from the back of the speedo and is not part of the plug. Originally that wire was solidly wired into the dash and had to be clipped to take out the dash panel. They were later twisted together upon reinstall. Check for a red /yellow striped wire that has a clipped end somewhere inside the dash. The other end of that wire is attached to a red plug

yellow red wire from the speedo goes to a connector where it meets yellow black wires. one yellow black wire goes to fuse panel #8 fuse. the other yellow black wire goes to the cigar lighter. this according to an old wiring diagram.

according to Brad Artigue's version the yellow red wire goes from the speedo to a connector where it meets three white red wires. those white red wires go to the clock and the tach and the optical fibre light. this occurs at the same connector mentioned above with the yellow black wires.

i dunno if this makes it better or worse for you. best i could do. if you drop me an email, i'll gladly forward BOTH wiring diagrams to you. mbouse at chartermi dot net

do you have a picture of the front also , i'm curious where that is for , looks like an extra bulp connection or so

edit: compared to my pictures it seems your missing a bulp for the dial illumination (mine is on top , on the back of the gauge) i bet there 's your extra wire ? bolt of the one screw holdong the plastic piece and see if there's a bulp underneath

Tappy, His speedo is correct. He just has to find the other half of the red yellow wire in the dash and twist them together.
