without a resonator, the Magnaflows are pretty loud at 4k rpm under heavy load. They are tuned for maximum db at 4k, so fwy driving can be noisy if you've got your foot in it. It's pretty easy to add a small resonator though

I still have the stock resonator and the cat at this point. the exhaust tips also are resonated. Do you think this will be enough? Do you have any recommendations for mufflers that are sporty sounding yet you can live with on long tours.

with a cat in place I wouldn't be too concerned with too much noise even without a muffler

I keep thinking I Would like to remove the cat, but everybody (exhaust shops) has told me that it is working properly and I really won't gain much in the way of performance since it is working. Your thoughts?

I just removed the cat from my 82 last week.It feels as if the performance has improved, but even if it hasnt the sound is 100% better :D Not too loud, but you can hear that sound at all rpms. Before,I couldnt hear the engine note at low rpm.I now have a straight pipe back to a older Ansa muffler.I love it.

I de-smogged my 79 engine and replaced my exhaust system at the same time, leaving the resonator on and taking the cat off. The muffler was an ANSA.

And I have to tell you, my car is peppier for the effort. Not crazy quicker or anything but it does feel more eager as though it can breath better. So I don't know if this was caused by the cat removal or the whole de-smogging job as a whole. And yes, it does sound pretty darn good now!

I just got the new 4" round Magnaflow muffler and twin resonated tip put on. It sounds worlds better than before, but that isn't saying much. The previous muffler was hanging on by a thread and rattling like crazy. The sound is deep and not over bearing. A nice growl, but mellow. I need to drive it more to really get a feel for it. I have not driven it at highway speeds.

Anybody know how much a test pipe runs? I'm curious to hear what it would sound like with it removed? I just received Gus's airbox replacement piece in the mail as well so that is next once I get some sensor safe sealant.

I thought the resonator was in the muffler. Do we need the resonator for any reason but sound?

Some are in the muffler, but some are seperate, especially in luxury cars where silence is appreciated.

My 79 has a small resonator just foward of the rear axle. I was thinking of taking it off when I installed my ANSA muffler, but I was told it might be abit buzzy or booming at certain RPMs, so I left it on. It has a low snarling sound, but it isn't loud at all and most imortantly, it doesn't buzz or boom!

So with most exhaust systems, especially in smaller engines like we run, I think a resonator is necessary, unless you like the sound of those big trash can mufflers on those little rice burners! They usually have no resonators, and we all know how harsh they can sound at certain RPM's.

Oh, I don't even think I have a resonator on my car. It has a 4-2-1 right to the muffler.

I have a straight pipe to the Ansa on the rear.Great low, growl :D sound!Absolutely no boom, buzz, coffee can etc..Easily carry on a normal conversation, listen to the stereo,or listen to the great exhaust note.It is all personal preference.I couldnt drive something that sounds like those little rice rockets!

I'm running the two original resonators on both my 71 and 72 Spiders, with Ansa exhausts. They both sound just like an old sports car should. :D I found a way to make the exhaust sound not so noticeable however. Stick a couple IDFs on the engine and you can't even hear the exhaust!
