Thanks for all the er, suggestions? I called around locally a few radiator places for an acid wash. $150 was the going rate, which is way too much $$ for me to recondition an old tank when a new one is $225.

What about this stuff. Anyone have any experience with this. Its a complete kit, reasonable price.

sounds like it will work, will you be able to get all of the loose rust out of the tank? And of course, if the tank is really rusty, how thick is the metal that's left? It's not rust building up on the metal surface, it's the metal disintegrating

I had planned on using a long handled flexible wire brush or something first to see how much rust comes off. The tank itelf is not rusted through at any part and the outside of the tank looks fine, just looks like some surface rust inside. I might try also using some of the remedies with Muratic acid also to try to get all the rust out. I can tell you though that $60 plus lots of labor aren't looking too good compared to a new $225 tank. I sure didn't think that getting this car running again would start with refurbishing the gas tank, but I guess you gotta start somewhere. Thanks for all the help!

Mike, all the answers you need are in the above posts. Stop trying to reinvent the wheel (gas tank). First off, never use Muratic acid, it embrittles the metal. The tank is divided into three segments with dividers, so using a brush will only get you into one chamber, how are you going to clean the other two hidden sections. Other guys have done this before, follow what they tell you, its wise and free advice.
And yes, you can always buy new.

The epoxy sealer should be adaquet to capture whatever is left, and without Oxygen, the rust should be in check.

Yeah thanks Pope, I tend to overanalyze things sometimes. I thought it was an open tank, thanks for the information. Ill give it a go with the remedies suggested above.

another option. My fiat had been sitting for maybe 20 years. THe gas was paint thinner. Took it to a radiator repair shop, Same place i took the radiator to and they cut the bottom out of it, relined the whole tank, then welded a new bottom into it and applied an epoxy finish on the outside as well, All for $50 bucks. As good as new now.
