Has anyone really rebuilt a spider transmission?
Question #1. Use Permatex on gasket or leave the gasket naked.
Question #2. I was told to not paint the trans case by the shop who cleaned it. Was told that paint insulates it and makes it run a little hotter than it should. In fact everyone at the shop chirped in that suggestion. Any ideas?

The transmission is much simpler than you imagine. Less complex than rebuilding the engine in many regards.
I didn't use any sealer when I rebuilt my tranny 1.5 years ago. I wanted to be able to easily split the pieces, if need be, in the future. I do have one annoying leak, so in hindsight, I wish I had put some sealer. A Permatex product was recommended to me: High-Tack Spray-A-Gasket Sealant, item #80064.
I agree that you don't want to paint the tranny. For one reason, you'll really never see it. Secondly, it will affect the heat transfer.

This is what the inside of a Spider transmission looks like. As you can all see, one of the bolts is missing.
You will also notice that a door panel is good to use as a floor protector for the gears. I hope it cleans up!

Ron, Global Cooling has hit the state as we are going to be below zero for the next few days. As such, my butt will not be seeing the inside of the garage for a while. The good thing is that the 10" of snow really seals up the gaps in the exterior doors, so the wind cant come in.
Funny thing is Ron, that is a stand-up deep freeze, thats where the rest of the cow goes. Its colder outside than in the freezer.

I use sealer on the gaskets, too much work to have to fix a leak later on.
As for paint, We hooked up with a company at the SEMA show that is making tranny paint that will not hinder heat transfer. We got some samples and it's great stuff. Very useful for engine paint also, since you don't want to trap excess heat in the motor either

Wow! Really nice door panel! Will you be using a kick panel in the lower corner, or keeping the clean look as it is now?
Say, in addition to the missing 8 - 1.0 x 35mm bolt, it seems that you're missing a detent ball, and have a wear issue with 3rd gear synchro ring
Seriously, that's pretty impressive seeing all the parts disassembled and displayed on the floor like that. Of course, we'll be even more impressived to see them all back together again, and to learn that it actually works! I've got confidence in you, Pope.
The picture is a revolation for me. Until now, I never knew that the steel sleeve in the center of the bell housing was easily disassembled as you've shown (I thought maybe it was a shrink fit or a tight press fit -- but it seems that it is just a light press fit with an o-ring seal). I've got a 1438cc bell housing that has some wear on the sleeve. Now, I see all I have to do is find a replacement sleeve, rather than the whole bell housing. Guess I'll start a separate thread for that. Thanks for the education!

I rebuilt about 12 years ago, but didnt know what I was doing. I used blue silicone gasket sealer back then instead of kit, and never had a leak, but got a kit from Bruce's this time. Also have to do some work on the 5th/reverse fork. Trans worked well before, its just that while its out, I'll get it back into great shape.
Alvon, I'm leaving it clean with no kick panel, so the girls will have to go barefoot, while they hold my beer!
The steel sleeve does just pop off with a little tap of the hammer from the backside, it also has a seal that needs to be replaced besides the O-ring, and the missing bolt was an 8m x 1.25 (oh so close)!
