Greetings and HAPPY NEW YEAR from Lafayette, Louisiana. Nice that I was able to find a fiat forum!(Seems that there are forums for everything now. Ive been a frequenter of watch colleting forums for years now). Anyway, I have a 1979 fiat spider (reference the only current picture I have), automatic transmission, carb, burgandy interior, 94k original miles that ive owned since 1985(since high school). My grandfather was a mechanic and my dad worked with him when he was younger, so I was able to keep it on the road without much problems and with the help of International Auto Parts. Oh sure there were problems, like a faulty magnetic pickup, head gasket leakage, two timing belts failures, rebuild carb, couple water pumps, blown up distributor cap, automatic radiator fan problems, pollution control valve malfuntion, alternator problems, replaced tie rod ends & sway bar bushings, crossmember failure, electrical issues, you know the usual stuff. So much history with this car I could write a book. Sadly it hasn't even been started in at least 7 years or so. Damn I miss tinkering with it! Long story short, it was parked in my grandfather's garage after I started having some brake & transmission problems. Had another vehicle so it just sat there. Unfortunately it was exposed to some moisture in the garage, so it has some minor rusting on the replaceable body panels on the back of the vehicle and the rims a little, but nothing serious thank goodness, and a rat decided to make the engine compartment its home for a while but glad it wasn't inside the vehicle. I rescued it about 5 years ago and brought to my house where it sits comfortably waiting for rejuvenation. Problem is that my better half thinks its a heap of junk(and she constantly is on my butt to get rid of it), so it may be a while before restoration commences.
Now that I got the background story off my chest, my first question to the forum is since it has been so long since the last run, what precautions do I need to take before I try to fire it up again? My first guess would be to clean out carb really good, pump out gas tank and replace w/new gas, replace oil & filters, gas lines, etc., and maybe get a new radiator(or flush the hell out of the current one and see if it works) & timing belt for starters? Or is this gonna require a very thorough engine overhaul prior to starting, ie replace rings, gaskets, etc? When it last was started it had sat about a year and fired up with some carb priming and a new battery, no problem at all, but 7 years is a long time! Any insight is appreciated and I look forward to posting any progress I make in the next few years with it. Also, where the heck can I get one of those vent window latches, you know, the ones that glue to the vent window? I lost the one on the driver side many years ago and have had zero luck finding one since.
Mike

welcome, I hope your wife gets on board with ressurection. To add to your start up plan, I'd remove the spark plugs and add some auto trans fluid to each cylinder before turning the engine

Hello Mike, and welcome.
After soaking, maybe try turning over the engine with the spark plugs still out.
Brakes probably need work, too, but rebuild kits and hoses are cheap and DIY.
Good luck!

Get yourself a small bed that fits in the garage in case the wife doesnt get on board.
There are plenty of guys here that are on their second or third wives, but still have their first Spider.

Looks pretty sharp to me. Hopefully you get her running without too much trouble. Someone here on the forum has the window latch you need. Check out the post by Steve Eubanks ("seubanks") in this post: http://www.fiatspider.com/f08/viewtopic ... dow#p34111

Nice looking heap of junk you have there. It's an automatic so get your wife out there to help you and let her drive it. Hopefully she'll come around to our side of the fence!

I would change all the fluids in the car, and open up the top of the fuel tank to see what it looks like inside. If you're just a little bit lucky, it may be fine after sitting so long. Mine had sat for five years when I bought it and it suffered no damage of any kind.
Good luck,
Ron

That car looks awsome if I compare it to mine.

Thanks guys for the welcome. Look forward to posting some more pics later. To kristoj: I had looked at that post earlier, but it seems that those latches are earlier edition latches. Ill see if I can get some pics of the one I am looking for. Are there any other recommended sources for Oem Fiat parts other than Intl auto? (Thanks Swede for your recommendation). Im trying to get a handle on how much this is gonna cost me to bring it back to life. Im guessing 3g will go a long way to getting it running again provided I do a lot of the work myself. Any input from other members on how much it has cost to restore theirs, from paint to parts. (Don't even mention time $$. I know its going to be a labor of love). Just a rough guess. Has anyone had their frame stripped and powder coated? Im not sure I want to spend this kind of $$, but after further inspection there is a little more surface rust than I would like to see, but its all undercarriage in the back. Again, nothing serious. Would a gentle sand and spray paint with a rust resistant paint do the trick? Fortunately the prior owner (my uncle) had a rust proof coating applied when it was purchased.
What about a source for rag tops? The ones at Intl auto seem pricey.
Sorry for the barrage of questions and all input is appreciated.

We have a few vendors we like to use:
Vick's Autosports: http://www.vickauto.com/
Midwest 124: http://www.midwest124.com
Bruce's Parts Bin: http://www.fiatparts.com/
Our Fiats are a unibody construction so powdercoating the frame is impossible. We sandblasted the body on mine and sealed the metal with and epoxy primer before we painted it. Some people use POR15 for rust prevention, but I don't believe it's feasible to use for any colorcoated surfaces (exterior panels) since it's hard to work.
