I'd suggest you test the charging system if a new battery keeps running down

The battery would run down from trying to start it so much. When fully charged back up the car runs fine until it stall and then won't restart.
OK, since I bought this car a month ago, I've replaced the battery, fuel & air filters, the rotor and dist. cap, the core and the electronic module, car would start but not idle, if I kept 1 foot on the gas the car would go but not have any power and still backfires. My neighbor came down and said
"this car really wants to run, its almost there". He put his head under the hood, took the disconnected the vacuum advance, took it off and said here is your problem. IT WAS NOT OPERATING AT ALL! ordered a new one, waiting for it to arrive. lets keep our fingers crossed. I'm determined to drive this car this summer.

I doubt the vac adv will change your situation much. The advance only works under high vacuum/low load situations, cruise condition at highway speed. I'd check the timing belt to make sure the cams aren't off by a tooth from the description of your problem

Ignition module may be it....

Having just had a problem with the ignition module cutting out after the car warmed up, I agree it is something to look at. Changing it out couldnt hurt, given the amount of work you have already done. Nothing like getting half way to somewhere or half way back and having the car cut out.
