Chronic Starter Replacement

Post by Upset99 »

In the past 2 years, I have replaced my Starter 3 times. During the period from initial replacement, I often hear a relay click on from underneath the dash but there is no sound from the starter (or solonoid). Eventually, when I turn the get enough times, it will engage and start the car. Initially, this problem is minimal but as time goes on, it only gets worse until the car's starer wont turn over at all. I have replaced the ignition switch too. We have gone thru the wiring and haven't noticed anything unusual. Any ideas????

The first two times, we rebuilt the Starter with the original Core but this last time, I bought a new remanufactured one. Eventually, I would like to replace with a good gear reduction one BUT I do not want to this until all of this is straightened out.

Hello

It would be a great help if you post pictures of your car on your first post , then tell us wich car you have :) , I'm shure there will be someone to help you trough , Mark allison is selling a new lightweight starter if your seeking one (brandnew not remanufactured )

I would take out the voltmeter first and see how much volts /Amp you have on your starter terminal , and check out if its properly grounded Then you cabn work from there. If the current is good , there's probably a starter issue (dont know if theres a relay involved , could be faulty if there is one ?)

but then again i'm far from an expert and dint had an starter issues yet (first need an engine)

Tappy gives good advice. When you removed the faulty starters, did you have them tested? It may just be a current issue. These starters are pretty beefy, as you probably know from having to remove them so often! You can take a screwdriver and lay it across the studs on the starter to see if the starter engages and turns properly. If it does, then you may have a wiring problem. It wouldn't hurt to clean all contacts and connectors related to the starter/battery either.

are these "new" starters that you are putting in?
are these "used" starters that you are putting in?
are these "reconditioned" starters that you are putting in?

where are you getting these starters?

answers to all these, and more, questions are desired before we can (or wanna) really help you.
