Adding Turbo

Post by Scarpa »

Hey is it possible on my '81 CS0 to add a turbo and essentially turn it into CS2 model?

CS0, CS1, and CS2 refer to the chassis type for the spiders, but Fiat's system was kinda goofy. CS1 is the 1800 spiders up through 1978, CS2 was the carburetor 2L spiders in 1979 and 1980, and CS0 was the fuel injected spiders from 1980 onward.

I'm not positive what a turbo spider is, in terms of CS number, but the turbo was in 1982 so I guess that would make it a CS0?

So what is Scarpa exactly asking, Bryan? I'm not sure I followed his question, why it matters.

I don't know for sure, so we'll have to wait for Scarpa to get back to us. My own feeling is that it would be very, very difficult to add a turbo to a fuel injected spider (or any spider). There are far cheaper and more reliable ways of gaining an extra 20 HP (high compression pistons, cams, etc).

Sorry it took so long to reply.

According to this Fiat Spider Wiki, 1981 had a CS0 ( no turbo ) and CS2 ( w/ Turbo ). I have a CS0 per the car's ID plate.

Thanks, Bryan, for the feedback. It's not something I was sure to pursue eventually. It sounds like I shouldn't and should invest in other areas.

I agree with Bryan: too much, too hard, not enough payback. But if you are desperate for a turbo spider...find one for sale. They pop up every once in a while. Fun to mess about with. Also a huge headache. Ask me how I know.

Looking forward to seeing that dyno chart. Do you know how much boost you are running?

I believe the turbos did not come like that from Fiat. They were the brain child of the US importer.

I was running about 14 PSI before i crack the piston #4 Between the compression ring. We decide to shave .060 from the top of the piston to lower the compression to try to prevent knock. This kit is not from Fiat but homemade.

That's quite a bit of boost. Are you running an intercooler?

Sounds like you have a very cool project. Have you shared specs, pictures? I'd be interested.

Picture here is not so funny. I call it my little racing gokart. I now install a 131 transmission in it.
