Baby I earned it

Post by midlifecrisis »

Hello all,
Actually signed up a few months ago and forgot to do my intro until now. From Pennsylvania and purchased a '75 spider back in May with my pandemic savings. I really didn't need another car, under other circumstances probably would've spent the money on a vacation but that wasn't happening. The wife loves convertibles and I love classics, so when I saw this beauty come across cragslist I couldn't help myself. But since I'm 41, when I come home with a sporty, shiny red little convertible, everyone had the same lame joke as if they were clever "what? having a mid-life crisis?" Funny, when I bought a completely impractical '66 Mustang as my daily driver at the age of 29 no one said that, hmm... But rather than get butt-hurt about it, I decided to own it instead, hence the username, and I'm even thinking of making it a vanity plate if it's not already taken. But on that note, I've always been into cool old cars, but primarily American muscle (yes I still have the Mustang but it's seen better days). Never really been in to the eurosport scene before, but I'm already 100% in love with this car and I'm really looking forward to learning more about it here and elsewhere, thanks!

Welcome. Funny some friends said the same thing to me when I bought my Spider.

Looking forward to seeing pics of your car.

Too funny! My dad bought a red '69 spider when he was 40, and when his son (me) took it away to college when I was 18, my mother had to buy him a '78 spider to "help him get over it."

Freud would have some insight on this, or perhaps some scenes from Hamlet. I still have the '69 to this day, and it runs just fine even after 52 years. Might leak a drop of oil now and then.

I bought a motorcycle for my mid-life crisis. Almost 23 years ago.

I explained to my wife, I was going to acquire one of the following, in order of cheapest.
1- Motorcycle
2- Airplane
3- Mistress

She agreed to 1. Grudgingly.
1979 Fiat Spider (since new)
2005 Lincoln LS (the wife's car)
2003 Chevrolet Cavalier (daily driver)
1999 Honda Shadow VLX 600
1972 Grumman Traveller 5895L (long gone).

I’m in the same boat as the OP, having purchased my Spider in April of this year. I think it was kismet, as the car and I were both born in February, 1977. So we’re enjoying our midlife crisis together.

I also started the conversation with my wife like this: “hey, how about a motorcycle?”. But that was a negotiating ploy more than anything, and let’s be honest, we both knew it.

The airplane and the mistress are out of budget, but the Fiat has been fun.
