Fuel Sending unit adjustment?

Post by TulsaSpider »

I have noticed that when I fill up from when the lil red light comes on I can only put 8.5 gallons in. Has anyone tried adjusting or bending the rod or something similar? I like to know exactly how much gas I have!

The tank only takes 11.4 gal., so I would say that having a little less than 3 gals left when the red light comes on is perfectly OK. You need reserve in the tank.

Wanted to follow up and see if you made any changes to the sending unit. It would seem that it would take only a small amount of bend to make the adjustment your suggesting. I would think it would be extreemly difficult to do it with any accuracy.

I noticed today that my red light was coming on with the gauge indicating 1/4 tank of fuel. if the gauge is accurate it would mean that I have about three gallons in the tank. Does that match up with what you are seeing. FYI I put in a new sending unit about a month ago.

No I haven't mad any adjustment as of yet. I am still thinking about it. I am sure I'll get bored and tinker with it sometime. You are correct I was going to make only a very slight adjustment. I still want some comfort room!
On mine..
I can't get mine to register full. After about 50 miles it's at 1/2 a tank, then the following 150 miles or so it goes down from there. My light comes on when the needle is pretty close to pegged at E. Once mine is pegged I am calculating that I have 3 gallons still in the tank because I can only get 8.5 gallons in there if it is reading empty.

On the sending unit in the gas tank, the sending unit has a plastic covering that has a wound wire part under it. The gas float has a feeler that rides that wound wire. After time, the thin wire wears out and becomes brittle and breaks, causing false or no readings. It is just easiest to go and get a new gas sending unit. They cost around $40 which isnt too bad.
