engine
how can you tell if your engine is sitting in the bay straight ? mine is at a twist, so when i line up the transmission crossmember, they do not line up to the studs

With the engine mounted on its mounts, I put a small level across the top of the block, before the head was installed. Then I put a level across the crossmember, from underneath (cuz the engine is un the way, doh!), from point to point, far left, far right, and compared the angles. This gives the ROLL angle difference. Car must be on level ground to be fully accurate, i.e. little flex. I found that with new engine mounts, it sits almost perfectly in place. There is a little bit of adjustment room, but not much. If these figures are way out, something is probably bent, crossmember, mounts, etc.

One possibility is that the engine mount brackets are the wrong ones, reversed, or just not angled like they should be. Those are the metal brackets that attach to the bottom of the engine with 4 bolts, and the "foot" on them sits on top of the rubber engine mounts. The brackets should both sweep in the same direction front-to-rear, and they usually sweep rearward like an airplane wing.

I had the bracket wrong way, It made aligning to the studs difficult but not impossible. Was much better when I had it in the right orientation. I can not remember what orientation, Long side or short side to drivers side.

Pre-catalyst cars have a notch on the passenger (long) side of that bracket for the exhaust, explaining why it is offset in the first place.
