Starts but won't run.

Some backround: In Oct. blew a head gasket. Got a remand cyl. head from Midwest. Put it together and it ran fine. In Nov. I moved from central NJ to Pa. Drove the car 80 miles to the new house and it ran fine. Put it in the garage and didn't start it until early Jan. First start no problem. Fired right up. I let it warm up to running temp. Two weeks ago it started but ran rough and spit and popped and wouldn't idle until the temp came up. Huh. I put in some dry gas and waited a few days. Now it fires right up but won't stay running. Seems like it runs fine briefly on the cold start injector and then dies. I can't keep it running even with the throttle. Where should I begin? Let me add that my garage stays at about 40 degrees F.

My first guess is the thermal sensor? on the coolant tee. The engine wont idle or idle badly if that has passed it's useful life. Fairly inexpensive to swap it out. The connector on that will degrade with the heat as well.

+1. I think if the AFM connection is loose it might do the same thing too.

Turns out that the molded tube that connects the AFM to the intake plenum slipped off. I never tightened the clamp when reassembling the engine when I changed out the head. What a dumbass. Now it runs great again.

There ya go! Was related to the AFM, indirectly. So we have some good data to add to the compendium.
