81 spider 2000 St. Paul MN wiring mess

Post by whatsupwill99 »

Hello All! Im a first time owner, and just starting the process of piecing together an 81 that has been sitting for the last few years. Its not too bad rust wise--some bubbling, and alot better than anything else for sale around here. (Minnesota USA)I jumped on it. Ive just started to do what youd expect with a car thats sat ie: Fluids, battery, ignition coil, a new tank, and a fuel switch on the way. I'm currently adressing the mess of wiring that took it down in the first place. The wiring to the ignition that's giving me problems almost looks like it was meant as some sort of fix back in the day, and doesnt line up much to anything I find online. Have any of you adressed something similar? Id love to see links/ diagrams of how to get my head around it. Past that, if any of you know of something 124 specific that I may also want to adress, I'd be appreciative of the advice. Thanks alot!

Welcome aboard.

There are wiring diagrams for the 81 - check on Mirafiori.com. If you can't find them I have a set. PM me your email and I'll send them to you. Butchered wiring seems to be a common affliction of these cars, although as one who has modified his car's wiring reasonably substantially I'd also say butchering is in the eye of the beholder!

As stated above the libraries at Mirafiori.com are your best friend, also search the forums here and there for the "brown wire fix" that is the most common ignition switch hack. There's also quite a bit of info on ignition switch replacement that details the wiring harness in exhausting detail.

Welcome to this site. Fiat publication " Spider 2000 electrical Diagnostic Manual 1980-1981" has all the wire diagrams, circuit descriptions and trouble shooting info in one booklet. Yes it is available online for members of Mirafiori.com
