Edit - just found out that the bearing kit comes with races.
Howdy. I'm planning to do my front bearings and have noticed that our usual Fiat part supplier kits don't include the races. Seems to me that this is a perishable part that should be replaced. Do people usually leave them if not scored or damaged?
Thanks.

Depending on which one you're talking about, you can't leave them even if you wanted to. Like if you were changing the rotor out.
The bearings and races are nothing special, I just got mine from Rockauto. Dime a dozen.

Agreed that the bearings are nothing special. It's just odd that the races aren't provided with bearing kits.
I'm not following about the need to remove bearings and races if replacing the rotor. The axle nut and washer holds the hub (and outer bearing). The rotor is separate.
Thanks.

Sorry, I may be confusing things here. I did the bearings on the Fiat and then a few weeks later converted my VW to rear discs. On the latter, the race definitely gets pressed into the rotor.
Now I can't remember whether or not I replaced the races on the Fiat, actually. But then again, if they are okay, you can just leave them.

Re: Hub races when replacing wheel bearings
I am trying to figure out what this person is talking about
all vendors sell bearings with outer races. only American companies sell races and bearing separately like rock auto
I will re red his post to figure out what he is talking about
also, as far as including other parts as a kit, decades ago fiat parts vendors tried to sell bake pad kits with clips etc. fiat people went buggf%6k
we were thieves!, we were trying to steal from them! we were criminals! how dare we try to sell them something extra! oh my god, those rotten fiat parts vendors are trying to feed their families again. Robert vick said we were all poor people together!

Re: Hub races when replacing wheel bearings
While many do not replace them its a false economy since the old races will always have some wear on them even if it is not readily apparent to the naked eye. The wear will be in the thousandths and can quickly escalate the wear on the races on the new bearings to close to the same point where the previous set needed replacement.
Also critical when discussing the replacement of bearings is the correct procedure for packing them. Too many just smear grease on the bearing without actually packing them.
This video by Dan Anderson from the Farm Journal is one of the best out there:

Too bad the BBCode for embedding video doesn't appear to work. Is the syntax slightly different here?
