DISCOVERED CRITICAL ENGINE ALIGNMENT ISSUE THAT IS NOT IN THE MANUAL.

The Transmission support yoke only goes onto the transmission housing one way, BUT the support yoke underneath is NOT symmetric. Putting it on the wrong way will YAW the engine and transmission assembly by about a half inch at the back of the transmission from the longitudinal axis of the car. This is NOT shown in the manual. We found it by visually looking at the engine block, and then by placing a 6 foot straight edge along the block, longitudinally, and doing another visual check. It was subtle, but clear, that the engine was slightly yawed to one side.

Be careful with this as it would probably go together this way, and yet throw off the driveline angle wildly, likely resulting in an unexplained vibration. The SHORT side of the support for the YOKE goes to the PASSENGER side.

Good to know, thanks for that. Maybe this only pertains to earlier model years (like mine), but the support bracket on mine has a "curved section" that provides clearance for the exhaust pipe. If you try to put the support bracket on the other way, the exhaust pipe hits the support bracket and rattles.

Midwest-Bayless has a support bracket for 1979-1985, but I'm guessing the earlier years were a different design (as I indicated above): https://www.midwest-bayless.com/p-22908 ... 85-u8.aspx

I could really of overlooked this mounting it to the chassis, Thank Pete's keen eye for detail.

Bryan you are correct that the earlier Spiders are different, I have one rubberb bracket in my shed and it is shorter than the one mine takes.

yep. the trans mount is not symmetric and I had mine on backwards. Mostly noticed the shifter was binding in 1st and 2nd. much better the right way. clearly enough give in several "soft" joints through the system to not give much other feedback.
over time, probably a different outcome.
