Roller, I think you're right. As for the "cantilevering", I always assumed that the reason for that is that you want to not only prevent the engine from moving up and down, but also from side to side. If the engine mounts were vertical, the sideways shear force on the mounts might be too great if you went around a corner or the like, possibly tearing the mounts in half prematurely. Most engines that I've seen are mounted this way. I'm guessing that the angle of the engine mount stud is 45 degrees, but that's just a guess.

That makes a LOT of sense, plus, it transfers much of those forces from shear to compression, which is highly desirable!

Now, if the studs on the bottom of the engine mounts (or even just on one side) were longer, then the mount could be threaded on loosely like this, and there would be enough length to really tilt them so that the block could drop right on, then tighten from below. A suggestion for the vendors. But we will see if my idea works when we put the blocks back in. It would make it a lot simpler, so I hope it works.

You could always weld on an extension onto the stud. Would make it a breeze to tighten up.

Food for thought.

OK, so we proved to ourselves, on Tim's car today, that the short block can go back into the engine bay, can be placed onto the motor mounts, all completely from the top. The motor mounts can be mounted loosely from the top (with the large, extra thick washers that started this thread), and the motor can be dropped in onto the mounts without going down below. It is only for final tightening that one has to go under the car. Doesn't sound like much but this avoids a real pita.
