Hoping for suggestions on wiring colors for the electric aftermarket fan set up on my 1968

Post by tdskip »

Good morning. Hoping to get some suggestions on wiring colors to finish up my electric fan conversion on the 1968. I’d like to make sure it’s nice and tidy and uses factory convention as much as possible.

I have not found a color wiring diagram yet, so I apologize for the somewhat inane question.

Thanks!

I don't have the wiring diagram for a '68, but I do have one for a '69. PM me with your email address and I can send you a copy.

According to that the wires going to the fan are black for the ground and light blue from the fan relay to the fan.

A.J. has it right. A little more detail, although this is from my '71 (original) as my '69 was modified (by me, so may not be correct): A large black wire from the fan connector plug goes to ground on one of the mounting posts for the voltage regulator. The other side of the fan connector (positive) connects via a light blue large wire to the fan relay as A.J. notes. The 12v source for the fan relay is a large brown wire. The thermostatic switch (bottom of the radiator) has two wires, both of which are white with a black stripe. One of these wires connects to the ground at the fan connector plug (shares a terminal with the large black wire), while the other goes to the fan relay.

So, when the thermostatic switch reaches its set temp (210 oF or so), it provides the ground for the relay, thus activating the relay and supplying 12v to the positive side of the fan. The negative side of the fan is always grounded.

Hope this makes sense!
