weber 32/38

Post by dinghyguy »

Came into a weber 32/38 dgv carb recently off a 2l volvo and wondered if anyone had used them on fiats?
Tried to search but number like 32/38 or 38 are ignored in the searching. So anyone have any comments on using that carb?

cheers

I have a 2L Volvo, and have run it with a 32/36DGV; currently running a 38DGS, but will be going back to the DGV, and move the DGS to my 124BC 2L.
A DGV is a right side of the engine carb, a DFV is a left side carb; this has to do with which barrel is the primary; they both fit the same 'footprint' on the manifolds.
I have run the Volvo (right side carb) with a 32ADFA (left side carb, from a Fiat!) for many years; it did quite well, so I would expect the opposite fitting to work also.

Dinghyguy (in the too small garage), I think it should work just fine if properly jetted for your engine. I have a 38 DGAS on my '69 spider (with the 2L engine) and it seems pretty torquey. Idles fine, spark plugs are a good color, no misses, etc. I did have to play with the jets, but this was all done about 30 years ago and it's been that way since. I seem to recall I had to install the carb "backwards" as it's a right side carb, but since I converted to a cable for my accelerator linkage, this wasn't too bad. The engine does seem to stop pulling when I reach 5500 rpm or so, but there's plenty of power at lower rpms and 6000 is probably a good limit for a stock 2L anyway. Doesn't pull all the way to 7000 rpm as the stock 1438 cc engine did, though. Could be valve float due to having the original valve springs for all I know.

If it were me, I'd pop that bad boy on your spider and take it for a ride!

thanks all for the comments, I never thought of the right side left side issue. given that both motors are 2l i thought it should work, but i am not willint to put much effort into a new linkage. I will look a bit harder. I do know that the pair of weber 45dcoes that also came with the Volvo will not fit.
And bryan, the too small garage may get bigger this spring, looking for approval for the 3 car garage (actually 2 bays and a shop space, with hoist and parking pad next to it. We shall see what the municipality has to say.....
trying to decide on a 2 post hoist or a 4 poster and ability to stack the fiats. Suggestions are welcome.

Oh, Happy Day! I don't have any experience with a hoist or the like, but I am a big fan of lots of open space to work. Good luck with the city, though. When I built my workshop out back, lots of unknown land-use restrictions suddenly became apparent. My advice is to talk to the city and learn all you can in advance.

My concern, though: If you are no longer, "Dinghyguy, in the too small garage", will we have to change our way of thinking to "Dinghyguy, in the garage that totally rocks"?

Perhaps a BIGGER garage?! OMG!
How COOL!
Best of luck with the permits/local regulations business of getting those kind of things done. I've struggled through it before.
Coulda test ran my Spider with properly jetted DVG last fall, but a temporary linkage was a ridiculous thought. Stick with the 'DFV' configuration, unless you are ready to make some major linkage changes.
Best of luck with the carb upgrade that you have in mind,...
