I'm new to Fiat Spiders. I started working on a 1978 that I got a couple of months ago. Have not run it yet. The guy who owned it said he put on a new timing belt. The marks don't look right to me. Am I missing something, or did the gentleman not align it properly?
And the intake side sprocket doesn't look like any photos or diagrams I've seen. Any ideas?

Re: Timing Belt and Marks - 1978
Terance, I can't see the picture you posted, but in a nutshell, here's how the timing belt should be lined up:
With the engine at Top Dead Center (TDC) on the #1 and #4 cylinders (your timing mark on the camshaft should have a mark for this), the pulleys for the intake and exhaust should have a small hole in the inner face that lines up with marks on the camshaft housings. With the engine in this configuration, the distributor (or electronic ignition) should be set to fire on the number 4 cylinder. In addition, with the engine lined up this way, the auxiliary shaft pulley should have its timing hole (in the pulley) at about the 2'oclock position when viewed from the front.
I'm guessing that some of this isn't going to make sense, so please ask as many questions as you'd like.
And yes, be wary of "gentlemen" who promise you that everything is lined up very nicely, thank you very much.

You can open terance's image by right click and 'open in another tab'.
No, terance, you are correct. The exhaust timing is way off - retarded, I believe (assuming that the crank sprocket is at TDC #4 in the pic).
There are a number of timing belt replacement threads on this forum, with pics, that you can easily search for, and now you've got the printed info, too (above)!
Best of luck getting your Spider going!
And welcome to the forum!
Todd.

One thing that I was not aware of, Maybe you will find it in your search, The crankshaft pulley may not need to be removed if the belt has been changed before.

Re: Timing Belt and Marks - 1978
Todd, thanks for the suggestion, and I can see the image now.
Terance, now that I can see the picture, I suggest buying a new timing belt for this engine. I know the former owner said it had a new belt, but given the overall condition of the engine and the mistimed cam pulleys, I would just replace it to be sure.
