New engine I am working on!

Post by ga.spyder »

Here is a picture of my weekend project

Ok,ok...It isnt a Fiat engine (duh). It is a Keith Black 526 c.i. hemi engine ,running racing alcohol. She sports a 1471 blower and is putting out in the neighborhood of 2500-3000 hp!! I have been helping my partner put this beast together for 2 years. This weekend we finally got some bugs worked out and made a 6.41 sec. pass@ 214 mph.The two of us can pull the valve covers, resraints, hoses, plugs, blower, adjust valves ,refuel, put it all back together, warm it up,and have it back to the staging lanes in 30-45 mins. Not bad for a guy who still cant get the swaybar bushings changed in my Spider!!!

Man that is a sweet motor! But seriously I would use a smaller air intake when you finally get the bugs out and put it in your Spider. An air intake that large would just look silly on a Spider.

Ron, your 82 may pale in comparison, but those of us with the more powerful models know the thrill of driving with gobs of hp

I should have stated I am not the driver! My business parter is licensed for top alcohol, which is a 250mph+ class. This car runs 'top dragster' which is a class below. Plenty fast though! It is a profesionaly built and certified chassis, but all the assembly has been done by us in a garage here in Blairsville. We had it at Atlanta Dragway ,and they had bracket cars(souped up street cars) running. We fired it up and the announcer said ''Damn... that thing will knock the wax out of your ears!" I am offically the crew chief( of 3 incl. the driver!).It is a 2 man job to start the car,as I have to prime the blower and start it with a remote starter connected to the blower pulley. The thing will almost blow the shirt off your back when it fires.Pretty awesome. However ,my Fiat will still beat it thru the curves. It wont corner worth a crap! :D

ps,I think that injector hat would look great poking out of the Fiat hood!

That's just awsome, Craig. Nothing like being at the dragstrip and feeling the rumble of those engines through your body and smelling that fuel being burned. I sure do love racing!

yup, nothing beats that straight line 1/4 mile, stomach rattling shriek to the finishline. Gotta love those top fuel dragsters...

Could that engine fit in the trunk of the Spider? How about if you took out the back seat!

Wow Spiddy ,I am surprised by that.I felt that was a bad call, and I am sure you did as well! I see that some people are saying that FIA stands for Ferrari Int'l Assistance
Mark ,you are right about racing it back.We run down the track in a golf cart,p/u the parachutes, and tow it back. That monster burns 6-7 gallons per run! With the 10 gallon tank, it would run dry before it could make a 1/2 mile  It has 2-1'' fuel lines. Not very economical!!

Craig --This is some engine ! What would you guess this motor costs ? A bunch I bet..And I thought mine was going to burn the gas .. Say,,would you be willing to trade for the week end when I get mine done ? LOL ,,I still got to buy a few more parts and then get it togeather this fall and winter .. but ,,in case you take me up on it heres what I got to trade ,,for a week end that is ..Oh, by the way the motor is hooked to a chevy Truck and you wouldn't have to pick up no parachutes with mine .. Hey LD,
The motor was a result of some trading and other bits of luck( by my partner). He had a 454 block and heads ,and ran across a guy with the KB alum hemi block. The guy wanted a motor for a vette ,so they traded! There is a shop in Chattanooga that buys out drag teams used and old stock, for resale. The ignition, heads, crank, pistons, and ignition all came from there. He has about 25,000 in the motor. If you were to buy one complete from a engine builder the same setup would be 60,000.I dont have any money in the car ,although we sponsor it (tax breaks!!) together. With business as bad as it is ,the car has taken a long time to complete. :(

Craig,

You are one lucky guy! So if I pay your way up to Ohio, will you do a valve adjustment on my Spider and warm it up for me in 30 minutes???
