Well, I disconnected the motor from the wipers to see if it was the linkage, and unfortunately the motor isn't turning at all when they are switched on. One thing I forgot to say is that when the wipers are switched to the 3 (fastest) position, the dashboard lights turn off but it might be unrelated, as this was occurring for a couple months before the windshield wipers stopped altogether.
I haven't had a use for my voltmeter since I moved, so I cannot for the life of me find it. I believe it might be in storage. It will probably be easier just to buy a new one. Then I will be able to find out if it is the switch, the motor, or the wiring in between.

Is this the start of a trillogy? I sure hope so. The opening chapter was brilliant, I couldn't put it down. 
If I might suggest, you could continue it as though the car was another "Christine" hunting down the "neighbour from Hell", and as such, it could be the only Spider that never goes wrong........Ok, so that last bit's a little far fetched
