TH180 (3L30) shaft seal replacement?

What does everybody know about replacement of the shift shaft seal - passenger's side? Can it be done without removing the tranny? And how?
Mine leaks enough to necessitate replacement,...

Hello: Yes the shaft seal can be replaced with transmission in place. I got mine from my local Chevrolet dealer for a Chevette. When I purchased car in 2001 it kept leaking around the shaft. Further looking indicated the seal (metal ring) was completely missing so I assume someone forgot to replace on rebuild. I am sure mine was a replacement as the speedometer gear was an incorrect one and had to get the right one for that. I cannot recall if I had to remove the pan but I suspect I did to also change out the filter.

It quit leaking, then leaked, and now it quit leaking again (!damn thing!).
I'm keeping an eye on the fluid level and the garage floor,...I think I already have a seal, and my tranny's filter probably needs replacement, so I'll have to tackle this project soon, when time permits,...
