Side Markers removal

Post by Zoofly »

I am prepping my 1978 Spider for a complete paint job and would like to know if there are any tips on how to remove the rectangular side markers. I've got everything else off. Thanks!

The are held in by a sheet metal retainer that have two studs coming through them from the side lamp housings. Pull the lamp with its socket, remove the two nuts, remove the retainer, finess the beauty trim, lamp housing, gaskets and lens off by pushing them out from the inside.

I just removed one of mine and they are wing nuts making it even easier even though the hoses from the fuel tank make it a tight fit for my gorilla hands. Previous owner had hit the rear fender and the light with his ZTR lawnmower breaking the chrome housing into three places.

I glued it back together, quickly formed in a missing section (I was more concerned about the channel for the gasket) and gave it a coat with the DupliColor Automotive Chrome paint and the results for a quick and dirty repair are encouraging considering what I started with was so bad.

Replacements are almost $40 and require fender modification to make them fit plus the finish is not perfect on them either:

About $7 a can and enough to refinish several lamp housings:
