Wiper motor
Can't find a thread about repairing the wiper motor. Car, and the motor, have not turned over in at least six years. I've got it removed and am trying to test it and get at least a tiny bit of a something. Could the motor itself be frozen up? I'd give a go and trying to "break" the freeze but I'm not sure where to grip w/o bending/breaking something. Anyone tried this before?

Thanks, Drummond. I'll need that for down the road especially. May i ask: have you tested the wiper motor with it off the car? How does one do that? I mean, I'm assuming the black connector is ground and if I hit some juice to one of the others I'll get at least a twitch. Maybe?

Hi Rodo
yes. you can test it off of the linkage. just put it in a vice and test the connectivity of the contacts & brushes with a ohmmeter, if all is ok add power, if not some emery paper and Dielectric grease will help.
The link shows what wire to connect.

And then...last night discovered the gear is cracked. Had the case off to see the gear and started to rotate the magnetic end of the motor, saw the gear starting to move...and then it hit the crack. So need the new gear now. But better to havce found it now while all is out and apart.

Re: Wiper motor
Be sure to check for binding linkage and wiper arm pivots correcting any issues you find so you do not crack the gear again. The crack may just be a symptom and not the root cause of the issue.

Re: Wiper motor
And anyone have good suggestions for a replacement gear? There is something on ebay... not sure what to think. Waiting for them to reply about year compatibility.

Re: Wiper motor
Let me know what the guy on ebay says! I have a working motor but a busted gear. Ended up ordering a new motor but would love to make the motor work again if it's just a gear (couldn't find one anywhere)

Rodo
I might have a spare gear you can have. Will not be able to verify this until Sunday though!

Drummond, you are a mensch. But the ebay guy selling them, new ones, hints in his add that he has others for others years, to write them and ask for fitment. Hm, that was three days ago... You see if you've got one and I'll see if this guy has the real deal. I'll post here as soon as I hear something.

And...received one reply. Selller does not say a thing about model years, just that he has one version with a thicker shaft, one with thinner. Said he would email photos after I bought it. I bought it. No communication. Part comes from Egypt. I'm guessing he has a day job.

Re: Wiper motor
Update: just heard from ebay gear seller. He has two types of gears, one with a thicker threaded end, one thinner. Based on his picture on ebay my '81 needs the thinner. If this is even the right one at all. It should arrive in about ten days. I'll post with another update then, hopefully with pictures.

Re: Wiper motor
The gear is a winner. Duplicates the original perfectly and fits perfectly. I'm kind of amazed. $10 on ebay plus $15 shipping (from Egypt) and it was here DHL in three/four days.
Right, so if the images are posting I'll walk you through it. But before you remove the arm at the end of the shaft, note its location (I used a sharpie). The issue is getting one's wipers to stop at the correct stopping point, so it matters.
First fun was removing the wee retaining ring. I'd read about it on fiatspider. Pain. Magnifying glass pain. Need a very thin blade and to find the seam. And then watch where it flies off to when it pops.
Then you have the bits and bobs:
Dust cover, then three washers...or four. The catch for me is that I got distracted and the next thing I know I seem to have a fourth washer. Uh...started off thinking there were two under the dust cover, one flat, one wavy. Another was stuck up with nasty old grease.
This fourth one seems different, different material, maybe plastic. Now I'm thinking it may actually go on the inside. You can see it, black of course, at the bottom of the shaft:

Anyone know?
Will report again once I get it buttoned up and, I hope, running.
