Reviving heater fan

Post by rodo »

Just tried testing my heater fan. (It has not run in at least six years.) Got it to turn very, very slowly (w/ a power supply, not in the car). It is not happy. When I try to turn it by hand it is very stiff/difficult. I took the motor apart but I can't quite figure out what is causing what. There does not appear to be a bearing on the shaft end. Could this just be a bit of corrosion? polish it up and...good to go? Anyone have experience messing with these motors?

It's probably bushing so light oil or WD-40

Ah, that's it, thanks Orford. I cleaned up the shaft, oiled it up, had fun putting it back together, and then hooked it up to the battery charger (as a 12v supply) and bam! Wife was mighty impressed.

The bearings are usually Boston Bronze or Sintered Bronze soaked in an oil similar to sewing machine oil and should also have an absorbent pad saturated in oil either behind or surrounding the bearing. After cleanup longest life will be ensured by soaking these bearings in fresh oil and not just WD40. Dexron I or II ATF works very well for this purpose.
