I am looking for guidance on the proper way to remove the upper gear shift lever. I have removed the boot but I can’t see how to separate the upper lever from the lower lever. Any help is appreciated.

This may be of help to help to you. We have an exploded view of the Chrome shaft/Shift Lever assembly in our catalog. We have a version of our printed catalog in pdf form available at our website. At the vickauto.com home page find the heading labeled "Important Links" and follow it to the catalog download. The exploded view is on page 54.

Thanks to you both for your responses. I got the upper shifter off and plan to install a short shifter. Your advice and direction was spot on.
