Radio Wiring Question

Post by esodu »

I'm replacing my radio in my 80'. The PO ran the constant (yellow wire) power from the lighter. He spliced into the red wire going into the cigarette lighter. Lighter works so I am getting constant power. From there it goes to a harness that has each color for the radio (actually multiple harnesses). NLT it doesn't look to me as if there is an existing switched circuit for the red radio wire. My guess is he had it connected to the wireless lock/starter I removed (can't remember now it's been so long). The new radio will not power on and I am guessing it's due to the fact the red is not on a switched circuit.

Question - What is best/easiest circuit to connect into for the switched red radio wire?

If anyone has a picture of it that would be great.

Thanks,
Ed

hi,
it has been a while since i put in my radio in my '79.
I think i took constant power from the annoying chime, and put it to a rocker switch to power radio on/off.
the rocker is located next to the radio where a cover panel was removed. i adjusted the switch to fit the hole rather than the other way around.
if you see a picture of an original '79 dash you'll see the small cover panels next to radio.

I tapped into the key alarm circuit for power, when the key is in the ignition the radio is powered but when you remove the key it turns off. There is also an "always hot" wire going to the radio for maintain the presets.

Pretty sure the 1980 Spider came wired for a radio from the factory. If a previous owner has not removed the connector it should still be in the area of the center console where the radio mounts. Most of the ones I have seen are unused and just hanging there with the unused electric window switch connectors.
The connector will have:
Brown wire ---- Power in the start and run position of the ignition switch. This wire is unfused as the radios harness had an inline fuse
Gray/black------LH speaker
Violet/black-----LH speaker
Gray-------------RH speaker
Violet -----------RH speaker
Black ------------Ground
The speaker wire are routed behind the front kick panel/map pockets.

The manual states the connector has 8 cavities but I was thinking it has 6
The "hot all the time" wire for a memory or clock circuit in the radio is available at the courtesy light.
