Red ignition light on

Post by Budduncan »

After successfully changing the mechanical fuel pump on my 71 spider, my red dashboard ingition light is now on all of the time. I no doubt stressed several wires around the coil, but I do not see any broken wires. I charged the battery with my charger but have done this many times in the past. Could I have an alternator or voltage relay problem? Too co incidental since I had to install the new fuel pump a couple of times before I got it right. Thanks for suggestions.

that red light indicates your alternator is not charging

Thanks...I was afraid that was the case....At least my new fuel pump is putting out plenty of fuel! It is about time for a new alternator and regulator anyway.
Cheers,

Could a dislodged wire connection from the alternator cause the light to glow? Seeing that you did the pump and said that you disturbed some wiring, maybe that is the cause?

Reading the manual apparently there is a relay that when energised keeps the light off. It is located near the fuel pump so before I go after the alternator, i will check out the relay and wiring. Research helps before jumping to conclusions. Thanks.

Rroller123 hit the home run. After some examination I found a wire knocked off the voltage regulator and that solved the problem. I cleaned all the nearby ground wire terminals while in the mood. The car is running great and we took a victory lap in the rare Seattle sunshine. This is a great forum and so many helpful readers. Thanks to all.

Nah, I have just done the same thing myself multiple times and caused myself many headaches. In fact, just did this with one of my driving light relays when I put in the new master brake cylinder. Wondered why the Hella 550 driving lights wouldn't work when just changing brakes?? Wire pulled off when manipulating the MC out of course....
