Alternator Removal
I have a 1979 124 Spider and have a bad alternator that must be replaced. I have removed the wiring, upper belt adjustment bolt and the lower pivot bolt. The alternator still pivots in the original position with the bolt removed but will not allow it's lift off, I suspect that there is a bushing in the lower bolt area that has shifted and is acting as a pivot device. Any suggestions as to what is preventing it's lift off and how to proceed?

I also remove the belt tension bracket to the block that way its easier to lift the alternator up and out of the car.

Re: Alternator Removal
I was right. After a lot of pounding and Blasteer, I was able to drive the bushing in the rear of the alternator almost al the way out of the Alternator. It was about 1/4 inch wider than the alternator. When the nut on the pivot bolt was tightened, the bushing was pushed into the block pivot bracket and prevented the alternator removal.

Re: Alternator Removal
Great to hear you were successful. Do you think the alternator you removed is an original Bosch or Magneti Marelli? I think it would have been a 55 amp and one of those brands.

Re: Alternator Removal
The alternator was a Marelli. The rebuilder said the bushing was original. It's design was to allow a tight fit between the alternator and it's support bracket. And it did that.
