At the Races... Pictures
At the Races... Pictures
I have been working with a race team for this past season as a mechanic/engineer/etc... It has given me the opportunity to take some cool pictures of some awesome cars, and meet some awesome people. Most recently (today) Bobby Rahal, who is pictured in the red Brabham.
If you guys don't mind I would like to basically fill this thread weekend by weekend with the best pictures I have, if it gets old let me know. I know the composition isn't great in a lot of the pics, most of the time I am logging the competitors lap times and just don't have a ton of time to get the perfect shot.

Re: At the Races... Pictures
Very interesting and great pics! When Ron raced ARCA, I bought a zoom lens for my camera to take pics of his car on the track. Not an easy thing to do! I have several pictures of an empty track.

What is the red convertible with the gold bumper, chrome hubcaps, and no headrests?

Keep posting them!! I used to take race photos on an old Pentax.I have boxes full at home. There is a knack for shooting them.Is the red/blue prototyp a Ferrari 333p? If not ,it looks very similar and is beautiful.

Keep them coming! Very cool cars. Craig, I used to do the same with my old Pentex -- a K1000. I even had a small darkroom set up in the basement. Back then you had to "bracket" all your photos, develop the film yourself and make all of your trial and error adjustments with the photo enlarger as you were making prints. It was complicated, smelly and expensive. That was back in the day when my car probably still had that "new car smell." Damn, I'm getting old!

I still have my K1000 and the telephoto lenses! There are things you can do with that manual 35 mm that you cant duplicate w/ a digital.I never learned to develop them ,so it was expensive.I now have an urge to take it to the 'Petit LeMans' at Road Atlanta next month.I'll take Geoff with me to carry that monstrosity.

Re: At the Races... Pictures
I never really was able to master developing color as it was infinitely more complicated than black and white. But especially working in B&W, 35mm is still far superior to digital. If you go, you'll have to post your pix.

Re: At the Races... Pictures
THANKS for all the compliments!!!
I too used to shoot B&W and develop in my grandfathers basement. It was probably the reason I went to school as a Film major. Although film has similar composition elements, the only real skills I brough to photography are probably my ability to read a manual light meter, and frame a shot.... That being said there are a bunch of pictures that are washed out, and poorly framed. I will blame those on the fact that I am trying to take pictures between bleeding brakes, adjusting suspension, deciphering data-logs, and fetching Gatorade.
As far as the digital/film argument goes... I shot 8mm/16mm film camera all through school, and I loved it. That being said, I appreciate greatly my ability to stop down/up, and switch iso on the fly without wasting all sorts of time/money. Since my favored method of sharing my photography is the internet, the ease of that process is fantastic. I miss the almost therapeutic manual labor that comes with developing at night, with cardboard and duct tape keeping out moonlight. I have traded a manual film splicer, and solution, for Adobe Photoshop, and Premier..... None of the pictures I post have been pshopped, I keep those to myself. I wouldn't want people thinking im better with a dslr than I really am
Here are some highlights from today, click the above flickr link for the expanded album. BTW thats Rahals M5 next to my 535.
<More of the sweet cars I work on/drive.

Day 3 - Bobby Rahal Autobahn Historic Races
We decided to enter an endurance race, but mostly to get our customer more seat time to get comfortable for the sprint race the next day. The other driver is the team owner who is was a pro driver for this series back when S2's ran with IMSA in the mid/late 80's.
We were in the lead besting the best production cars at the event. Not that we were surprised, despite our cars low 140hp we are an easy 10 seconds faster on this 'drivers' course.
I apologize for some reason I missed that all day my ISO was set way wrong. I believe this was because of the night picture I took Friday night.

Day 4-
Finally a podium Our guys came in first and third. I was disappointed by the playboy like drivers out in some of the Indy Lights; production car like lap times, and crashing on the out lap.
