Changing gear oil question 1980 fiat spider

Post by sigkadetm »

I just drained out my manual transmission oil and replaced it with GL-1 from tractor supply. I kept filling it with an oil pump I use for my boat until it came out of the fill plug hole. Is this the correct way to fill the transmission? Also I drained out my differential and filled it with the proper EP gear oil. I filled it until it ran out of the fill plug. Question??? I only could get about 34 ounces in before it ran out. I think it calls for 1 and 2/5ths quarts.....that's around 44 ounces??? Did I do something wrong?

I was surprised one time doing an oil change when I let it drip out overnight and found about an extra 12 ounces. This was a motor oil change and it was dripping slowly. That's the only thing that I can think would explain your differential change - not all the oil drained out. Otherwise your techniques sound correct to me and it comes down to how neurotic you want to be about it I suppose.
