Horn goes off when steering wheel isn't held up

Post by scubachris »

So in my quest to get my electrical system repaired, I am starting off with my horn. It seems like an easy fix.

If the steering wheel isn't held up, the horn will go off. The wait of the wheel pulls it down and the ring on the hub makes contact with the bottom prong and blows the horn. I know if I hold my steering wheel up, it won't blow. If I let it fall, it blow sometimes. There is a little play in the steering wheel.

As I am typing this out, it doesn't sound right, wouldn't it have to complete the circuit for the horn to blow and wouldn't that mean that we had to have some kind of contact besides the prong? I did tape up the wire from the steering hub to the horn button. At first I thought that was the problem. The wire looked frayed a little. I also noticed that the brass wring around the hub was a little bent so I bent it back and now it sits flush.

So is the problem:

Steering wheeling "falling"? Maybe a half an inch in up down play...and if so...how do I fix it?

exposed wire....easy fix...just chase down the wire and tape it.

Thanks

Also, sorry for misspelling and whatnot but still full from the two gallons of gumbo I ate yesterday

your steering wheel shouldn't have any play up and down. It sounds like the bearing at the top of the column has failed
