blown gasket and cam damaged

Post by BammBamm »

My 1982 spider has a FI 2l with and 1800 head. I knew I lost compression on cylinder 3 but couldn't test cylinder 2 because the spark plug thread insert cam out with plug. Here is pics of the Vick's head gasket.

I had a over heating problem soon after installing the 1800 head. It never reached red but it got hot several times. But still ran well. Is this common for an over heated engine. Would a different gasket help.
My next issue is the exhuast cam.

I have been using this cam for a year on a 2l head with normal walmart oil and it had no measureable new wear. I ran it for a month with this 1800 head. The clearances were perfect on all lobes (i ordered shims 3 times) and only this one wore. I need to check the valve guide and stem for gauling. What valve tool should I buy?

I would bet that the head isn't flat from the looks of that head gasket. I'd check the deck for flatness between cylinders now. When the gasket is blown out like that the combustion flame is like a blow torch between cylinders.
As for the cam, you need to either use oil that has zinc or use a zinc additive

The head was just machine before I installed. It could be the block deck. Im planning to build a new motor but not quite yet. I there an option that will get me by if the deck is not flat? crushable gasket?

it all starts with flat surfaces, have you checked the head now that it's off?

If the head is off this is the one that worked for me.

Dumb question. Why do you need to pull the valves? Did they get damaged? I'm not sure you'd need to just to check the head for flatness.

I want to pull the valve for two reasons. Since the cam only rounded out one lobe Im concerned about the valve stem being gauled in the valve guide. Plus I want to change all the valve stem seals because I have new ones.

Could be a sticking valve cup too, causing excess wear on that location.

check for flatness of block and head.
get a new proper quality head gasket. preferably one with reinforcements in between cylinders.

So I figured out what the problems are. The block deck was not flat. Normally I would say pull the engine except i already have another 2l engine i plan to build next summer. This one just needs to last a year. I used a thick piece of high quality glass and high quality sand paper to flatten the deck to under .0002. it took several hours of controlled pressure and movement. i look good but before i pout the head on i needed to figure out what ate lobe 3 on the exhuast cam. i ordered a valve spring compressor and pull the exhaust valves. Number 3 is super sticky. What should I do to lap it? Some valve lapping compound?
