another fuel pump question

I have a 1981 fi sypder 2000 cranks but won't start. It would run several days before but won't start now. I found out the fuel pump was not running so a friend crawled under the car and ran a wire to it and it would run, we tried to start the car while the pump was running and no luck,shouldn't it get fuel this way? What do I need to do next?

Your fuel pump is good if it will run with a hot wire to it. You're not getting a signal from the ECU for it to run. A signal should be going to the injectors for them to pulse also. Without that, the fuel will circulate, but not get injected into the cyliders. It sounds like a control problem. The first thing to check is the fuse for the FI. It is in an inline holder up behind your fuse panel. It is in the brown wire with white stripe line. A good tool to have is a noid light, they plug into the injector connectors and will tell you if they are getting signal. I got a set for $20 from Autozone.

Well the weather here in eastern North Carolina is wonderful today so I decided to work on the Spider. The fuse checked out ok, so I crawled under the car and checked the wiring at the fuel pump again,that was ok. The next thing I did was check the current through the pump and found power to the pump but not through the ground side. I go looking in the trunk for the ground that I had read about and when I reached down the side I pulled up a wire that was not hooked up. After some checking to make sure what it went to(you guessed it the ground for the fuel pump) I grounded it and the car started rightup. I had the car in the body shop for some paint and they had pulled the tailight out and fail to hook the ground backup.

Good catch Jim. We hear a lot of "grounds, grounds, grounds." Guess they know whereof they speak.
